I was passing through a department store in Birmingham two weeks ago. I stopped at the crowded Benefit counter, and looked at a few products. I turned to the fragrance shelf, lifted my hand – and to my horror found no ‘Maybe Baby’. Even more horrible was the following moment, in which I was told that the fragrance had been discontinued – over a year ago!!!
How on earth this piece of information evaded me is still a mystery. It’s the most fabulous daytime fragrance – refreshing, sexy, subtle, crisp.
It’s one of those sturdy bottles that can just be thrown into the bottom of your handbag, and sprayed liberally whenever necessary. That’s how my last bottle was used and abused anyway!
User comments on the Benefit website –
‘Please don’t discontinue !!!!! I am addicted to this and have only a little left ….bought 4 bottles when i heard it was ending……please please get it in stock!!!’
‘This is my signature fragrance. I lived in New Orleans for years and this scent reminds me of the amazing smell from the gardens, but it’s still a light smell. It’s not overpowering and almost every time someone hugs me they say ‘wow, you smell good!’ Please don’t ever discontinue this product. It is so fantastic!‘
‘I don’t think I have ever came across a fragrance that is so sexy & innocent all rolled into one. I even have to spray it on when I go to bed… just to smell myself as I fall asleep! It’s feminine, sexy, powerful and old-hollywood all at once’
I told them that I had definitely bought Maybe Baby within the last year to 18 months – and the lady said that that was very possible – until stocks sell out it can still be bought – but new bottles won’t be made. Some Benefit counters may even have a couple of bottles left in their stock drawer – but no testers anymore.
Benefit have launched lots of new fragrances over the last few years – sales of ‘Maybe Baby’ have maybe dropped as a result – but it has always had a huge fan base – and it is such a shame to think of it no longer being available. It also won an Elle Beauty Award in 2010 – why discontinue it??
My favourite of the new fragrances is ‘Laugh With Me Lee Lee’ – gorgeously feminine. To my delight I received a bottle of it and a body lotion at Christmas two years ago – and it is a beautiful fragrance indeed. It is £29.50 for 30ml.

My office today was the snowy and really rather chilly Cruden Bay in Aberdeenshire. The picture below is of me and my friends from work, in Carmine’s in Aberdeen, on Union Terrace – opposite His Majesty’s Theatre. It’s a lovely family run Italian. Such a shame that I ruined the photo by accidentally covering Claire’s face!
