The 2012 Olympics are currently here in London and the UK – there is literally never going to be a better time to give gold, silver and bronze medals to skincare and beauty products! I will be doing the same for make-up and for hair, and other skincare categories too! I love all of these products – depending on your skin type and what you are looking for – my bronze could be your gold.

Cleanser

Gold Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel

Much loved by me. I fell in love with this wash off cleanser 15 years ago during a facial. It is soft on the skin, thoroughly cleanses. Soap free, fragrance free and suitable for all skin conditions. You only need a tiny bit of product, a bottle lasts a very long time. I cannot imagine anyone trying this cleanser and not enjoying using it.

Price – £25.50 (£21.68 with free worldwide delivery at the below link)

Size – 250ml

Silver – Eve Lom Cleanser

How can I give this acclaimed cleanser a silver medal??

This is a prime example of how these are three favourite products of mine and not a declaration of one being far better than the other.

Eve Lom’s cleanser is considered to be one of the best cleansers in the world. The most important skincare step. This is the original hot cloth cleanser. Skin is left radiant, exfoliated, decongested and cleansed. It comes with a woven muslin cloth. It removes stubborn make up, encourages clear skin as it contains clove oil, and eucalyptus oil which drains away toxins. It is expensive but acts as an all in one product – the make up remover, cleanser, exfoliator. Eve doesn’t even necessarily feel that a moisturiser is required afterwards! A 200ml pot would last a year – it really does go a long way.

Price – £40.00/£55.00/£85.00

Size – 50ml/100ml/200ml

Bronze – Kiehl’s Ultra Facial Cleanser

I love this wash off PH balanced liquid cleanser – it doesn’t dry out the skin. I had initially tried a friend’s bottle – and immediately got one for myself. Suitable for all skin types – you need the smallest amount for the most thorough of cleanses – so £15.00 (which is a new lower price) is good value. Dissolves dirt, grime, make up, debris. Suitable for women, men, and all skin types.

Price – £15.00

Size – 150ml

High Street –

Body Shop Vitamin E Cream Cleanser £7.00

Olay Total Effects Make Up Remover 150ml £8.15

Toner

Gold – Cowshed Chamomile Refreshing Toner

Alcohol free and made with soothing chamomile essential oil. It’s important to me, when I use a toner, that it doesn’t strip or dry the skin. I do feel disheartened when I see traces of make up or dirt left on my skin if I tone – I do believe a cleanser should do it’s job – but of all toners, I get particular pleasure from using this one. I love the Lavender Cleanser, that is the recommended step before this toner, too. Mini sizes of this cleanser and toner, are in the room if you stay at any of the Soho Houses, and that was how I first came to try them. Kind to the skin, and prepares it for moisture.

Price – £16.00

Size – 250ml

Silver – Eve Taylor Balancing Toner

This is the year that has brought me Eve Taylor. Her aromatherapy blends have been used by Dermalogica for years. This natural floral toner blended with aloe vera is the ‘balancing’ toner mostly suitable for combination skins – it soothes and heals the skin – it contains rose otto and neroli. There is no alcohol, no mineral oil, lanolin or artificial fragrance. For dry or sensitive skin try their ‘soothing’ toner instead – which contains natural lavender and chamomile.

Price – £12.89 (10% off all ranges at the TLC website below enter the code blusher at checkout)

Size – 200ml

Bronze – Elemis Soothing Apricot Toner

Another alcohol free toner – soothes with extracts of apricot – and is suited to extra sensitive, delicate, or hormonal skin. It also doubles up as a soothing eye treatment – saturate cotton wool pads and place over the eyes. The eye option is testament to how gentle this product is.

Price – £19.40

Size – 200ml

High Street –

Simple Soothing Toner £2.99

L’Oreal Triple Active Re-Nourish Velvety Toner £4.38 (my friend at work is obsessed with this toner)

Exfoliator

Gold – Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant

I challenge anyone to try Dermalogica’s Daily Microfoliant and to find it anything less than a joy. It is a rice-based enzyme powder that is gentle enough for every day use. A little powder mixed with a tiny bit of water – 60 seconds of massaging into the skin after cleansing – and skin is left clear, smooth and bright. I often mix in with my cleanser. The skin is left gloriously smooth. This is a key buy. This size tub will last for months and months.

Price – £38.50 (at the link below £30.40 and free worldwide delivery)

Size – 75g

Silver – Dr Darren McKeown Tri-Mineral Microdermabrasion Mask

Dr Darren is an aesthetic doctor. This range of five products has been carefully considered and put together. High end results at a lower price than many ranges on the market that contain high quantities of active ingredients. This mask – applied to cleansed skin and left for 15 minutes – contains microdermabrasion particles, which remove dead skin cells. The tri-mineral content energises the skin’s metabolism and boosts protein production.

Price – £16.99

Size – 50ml

Bronze – St Ives Apricot Invigorating Scrub

Review

If you like a gritty, grainy exfoliator, then this may be the one for you. Contains 100% natural exfoliants, and is extremely gritty. Do their 7 day challenge for brighter, clearer skin!

Price – £4.38

Size – 150ml

To buy – http://www.superdrug.com/stives

Mask

Gold – Aromatherapy Associates Deep Cleanse Face Mask

Containing natural mud, anti bacterial lavender and ginger – impurities and excess oil are removed from the skin. Recommended for use once or twice a week. For best results use after exfoliation and leave on for 10-15 minutes. Pretty much everything in the Aromatherapy Associates range is deserving of a medal!

Price – £32.50 (as I write £26.00 at the link below)

Size – 100ml

Silver – Bliss Triple Oxygen Instant Energizing Mask

Natural skin oxygen levels drop by approximately 70% after the age of 30. That alone had me reaching for this cult Bliss product. I use this mask in the shower – a few pumps of the pale peach liquid – that turns into expanses of delicate foam when applied to a damp face and chest. It tickles a little and smells of oranges. After a few minutes the froth began to dissipate, and when rinsed off skin feels extremely clean, it feels as though it has had a boost. I wrote a blog about this mask last year so for any more information click here

Price – £39.90

Size – 100ml

To buy – http://www.blissworld.co.uk/oxygen or http://www.feelunique.co.uk/blissoxygen (use the feel unique link if ordering from outside of the UK for free delivery)

Bronze – Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque

A bronze medal for this glorious face masque that I have used for years? That seems silly. Packed with a concentration of antioxidant vitamins – soothing, calming, enriching – it is pretty glorious for the skin. Leave on cleansed skin for 15 minutes. A great beauty buy. This is part of their ‘Age Smart’ range – promotes healthy tissue regeneration. This is not the first or last time that I will mention this product.

Price – £33.50 (priced 15% less £28.48 at the link below)

Size – 75ml

Moisturisers, eye creams and serums will be next..! This could actually be a never ending series of blogs!

Have a lovely weekend

  1. I love the idea behind this post!

Would you be able to do a review of the Olay Make up Remover? I’ve heard people say it’s good but never seen a real review and I’m unsure as it contains parabens…

  3. Tried Dermalogica Special Cleansing Gel after reading about it here. Cleared up my acne completely and the only thing that really works at keeping away the spots which were causing scarring.Such a simple product to use.
