For anyone visiting or staying in Sydney I can highly recommend ‘Madame Korner’ in Pyrmont.

I heard glowing reports on this salon from my friend Gilda – after asking her to suggest somewhere for a waxing appointment. A couple of times this week I nearly ran into a local salon in Paddington, where I was staying – just to get it done – but I’m so glad that I waited.

Firstly, this isn’t the most luxurious salon. It’s hugely practical – also a beauty school – and they manufacture their own line of products. The exterior is very grand, but inside I was in a cubicle – which I don’t mind at all for a maintenance appointment.

The therapists are all hugely experienced. Monica, who Gilda booked me with, has been with the company for years and years, and is a fabulous waxer – also very relaxed. One woman I go to in LA – and so do all my friends there – shouts the entire way through an appointment – it’s very amusing actually, but maybe not the most relaxing!

At Madame Korner they use hot wax – their own brand of hot wax – bees wax with azulene. I don’t want to patronise people who wax all the time and know the difference between hot waxing and strip waxing, but I’m just going to briefly cover it.

Hot wax is thicker than warm wax and it is not removed with a strip. It cools and dries on the skin before it is ripped off. I find it to be kinder on the skin, less painful and more effective on shorter hairs. It also doesn’t leave residue or stickiness on the skin. It would be recommended for more delicate areas generally. As Monica told me, if you can handle the heat when it is applied to the skin, it is by far the most comfortable way to have waxing done.

I wish I’d been staying long enough to try out other treatments at Madame Korner, I know they would be excellent. I didn’t find their website particularly comprehensive, so I will list a few of their prices and treatment examples. Men are also very welcome at the salon. (Prices in Australian Dollars)

  1. Loving the idea of international waxing recommendations. Actually when you get back to the UK I’d be interested to hear some recommendations for London waxing that isn’t super expensive…. so when you get the time! Also while we’re on international salons, mario badescu in New York is the most amazing place for facials, sounds ridic but I wait to go to New York now for facials!! (obvs only 1-2 times a year when I visit family out there). So facial recommendations in London too please! Loving your blog Fluzie keep them coming x

    • Been to this salon in Sydney and you are right it is really good. Hot waxing is by far the best, Im not really liking strip wax!
There is also a place in Crows nest, Sydney, called Beauty and the Beast!
