The first time I tried Barry’s Bootcamp was in February 2004. Kelly Brook had just started going, and we began to go together daily. We would go to the 7am class, that Barry Jay himself taught, in West Hollywood. He called us the Parson’s twins.
Regular Barry’s attenders often chose to join the ‘Academy’. This meant that every weekday they had to attend either the 5am, 6am, or 7am class. No-shows would receive a call at home from Barry, and punishment, when they next attended. We never joined the academy…
This week in LA, I went to two Barry’s Bootcamp classes. Once alone, and once with my friend Ayda, who also used to go daily. It is hard to get a class with Barry himself these days – there are now ten locations around the world – the latest bootcamp that they are opening is in London.
Each class is an hour long – typically 30 minutes on the treadmill, and 30 minutes on the floor with weights and bands.
It sounds manageable, but their aim is to work you to your absolute limit. Sprints and incline on the treadmill – repetition on the floor. The lights are dimmed, the air conditioning is off and the music is blaring. It truly is a difficult workout, but unlike in the old days that I remember, you do get to pick your own running speed – above 7mph and you work up from there.
Barry himself isn’t as flexible – if he says 8, or 9, or 10mph plus a certain incline, he will see if you aren’t doing it. However he can also see if you physically are at breaking point, because on one occasion I was, and he turned my machine down!
This week the two teachers that I had were Ricardo Vargas and Astrid McGuire, both classes were extremely hard but very good. You have a real sense of achievement when it is all over. Ricardo is one of the instructors that will be in London initially – I see his name already on the schedule there.
Every day has it’s own body focus. Monday is Arms and Abs, Tuesday is Butt/Legs and Shoulders, Wednesday is Chest and Back, Thursday is Hard Core, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are Full Body.
I personally am so excited that this workout is finally coming to London. It’s addictive.
