My favourite books, box sets and DVDs for Christmas

Book SHelf

Amazon is always my favourite place to turn to for pretty much everything, in terms of a book or a film. Every year there is at least one box set that I am desperate to watch. Here are some suggestions that I have really enjoyed of late.

Mad Men –

Mad MenMAD MEN

The box set of series 1-4 is £46.99. I bought this box set earlier in the year – about an advertising agency in NYC in the 1960’s – it’s superb.

Califonication –

CalifonicationCALIFORNICATION

Possibly my all time favourite series, set in Venice, CA. My friend Archie has just named his dog after David Duchovny’s character ‘Hank’.

The first three seasons are £21.99.

Breaking Bad –

Breaking BadBreaking Bad

My friends kept telling me how vital it was that I started watching this series. A chemistry teacher turns meth dealer. The description wasn’t particularly appealing to me, but my friend Vicky and I started to watch it on our road trip, and we both became addicted to it. The box set of series 1-4 is £32.75.

Grey’s Anatomy –

Grey's Anatomy

My friend India says that this series is the single greatest thing that has ever happened to her (and she is married). This is on my Christmas list – I’m very excited to start watching it – I appreciate that I am years behind in starting!

Seasons 1-8 are £59.99

Lipstick Jungle –

Lipstick JungleLipstick Jungle

This is definitely more of a recommendation for the girls. This series was written by ‘Sex and the City’ writer Candace Bushnell, and is a story of three friends. There were only two series made, which broke my heart!

The first series is £8.80, and the second – which is longer – is £11.90.

Searching for Sugarman –

Searching for Sugarmansearching-for-superman

This film isn’t released until the 27th December. I have talked to anyone who will listen about how wonderful it is. I watched it in the cinema in Cambridge in July, not knowing anything about it, and it became my film of the year. A true, and beautiful story about a lost musician. I have pre-ordered it as a gift for my Dad. Priced at £11.99.

Moonrise Kingdom –

Moonrise KingdomMoonrise Kingdom-Kara Hayward Suzy-Jared Gilman Sam

This magical Wes Anderson film that was released earlier this year – has 94% positive feedback on Rotten Tomatoes – which is extremely hard to achieve! Beautifully shot, quirky, and funny.

Priced at £11.99

The Artist –

The Artistthe Artist DVD

I saw this film in February in the cinema in Truro with my friend Max while we were touring with our play. The stand out films that we saw were this, alongside Moonrise Kingdom and Magic Mike. I assume that the majority of people will have watched ‘The Artist’, but after my friend Vicky told me recently that she hadn’t as yet seen it, it’s worth mentioning. It’s silent – but don’t be put off by that – it works.

Priced at £6.99

The New York Times, 36 Hours : 150 Weekends in the USA and Canada –

New York Times 36 Hours36_hours_america_top New York Times Guide

I found this gorgeous and informative book in Kitson in Los Angeles – a guide to finding the very best of a city or town. Sadly I found this at the end of the USA road trip that I just arrived home from!

This book is best priced at amazon.co.uk – £16.24 – even in the USA it was nearly double the price.

Skin Revolution by Leslie Kenton –

Skin revolution by Leslie Kentoneat-fat-grow-lean Leslie Kenton

Only buy this book if you are as interested in skincare as I am! Otherwise it is a terrible suggestion. Leslie Kenton’s book includes the 5 day facelift diet. She also suggests eating a great proportion of food each day – raw – very good for the skin.

It is priced at £9.85

Meet Me Under the Ombu Tree by Santa Montefiore –

Meet me Under the Ombu Tree

This book was recommended to me by a full family of women – all were naming it as their favourite book. I was truly upset to finish it.

Priced at £6.79

Tully by Paullina Simons –

Tully by Paulina Simons

It implies on amazon that this book was published in 2008 – it must have been re-covered – because this became my favourite novel about ten years ago. An extremely well written book about three friends, set in Kansas.

Priced at £6.39

Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life by Dear Sugar by Cheryl Strayed –

Tiny Beautiful Things by Cheryl Strayed

The most wonderful book of advice, by the once anonymous advice columnist.

Priced at £7.80 (with delivery)

I’m hoping my husband has taken my hints about getting me season one and two of Downton Abbey. I am obsessed with books so there are about 50 waiting to be read. I am looking forward to starting “Autobiography of a Yogi” by Paramahansa Yogananda. Happy Holidays!!!

    Hi Susie,

I am currently reading Jose Luis Olaizola’s “La guerra del general Escobar” which is in Spanish unfortunately, yet is accessible to people with a reasonably superficial grasp of Spanish, like myself. It is a biography of General Escobar from the Spanish Civil War. This is a very old book however.

My must have series this Christmas is “The Borgias”. which follows the rise of the Borgia family to the pinnacle of the Roman Catholic Church in the 16th Century and their struggles to maintain their grip on power.

Both are hugely interesting and entertaining and would make great gifts to anyone interested in such themes. I would recommend “The Borgais” to anyone.

Wishing you a lovely Christmas. May all your dreams come true for 2013.

    Michael
